Casting for Supporting Roles

Supporting roles are to be filled by men and woman mostly students who will play fiends to both the boy and girl. With no female supporting role we will be looking for a mixed set of supporting cast of experienced and young rising stars to help with the production. They will have to able to commit to a certain extent as they wont always be needed for filming but must be flexible. These roles are not directly speaking roles but some lines are spoken and background noise will be needed. The criteria is still a student look and they will be friends of the leading characters.

The support role is the boy friend to the leading girl so therefore to be played by a male. These need to fulfil the bad boy role in the film being intimidating and have all the traits of a rowdy student. The audience should not relate but resent the character and feel more for the girl in the relationship. The leading male should feel intimated by this character so they need to show an intimidating side.

Alex Dolby - Unsuccessful

This well known actor would be a credit to have among the team. However, we feel he doesnt fit the intimidating role we want to portray with this character. We are really upset and with regret can not have this major star in this role. This character is an important role to the fundamental points in the storyline and we therefore require this role to be fulfilled by an intimidating character with aggressive traits this actor simply can not apply. He has a certain way of acting which as limited his roles he can play in his career and fields of genre he can work within. However, he is extremely successful in what he does which unfortunately is not what we are looking for.

Niall Moore - Successful

This actor is a young inspiring actor. He has not been in many film or TV production but the few films he has been in have seen a character we would like to use in our film. We feel this actor can benefit from this film production and we feel he his inexperienced but are prepared to take a chance on this young actor and hope to help on the early stages of his career. He is able to commit to the hours of filming fully and will benefit highly from the experience. We has the production seen would like to use the roles he has played previously in his career to help bring a really intimidating and threatening role to the film which will help undermine the key points in the story line.

Casting for Male and Female Lead

The casting for the roles sees two main characters of the leading male and female in the trailer. We will require a younger boy and girl similar looking to the main actors and actresses to play a younger version. We also require a boy friend for the leading actresses and some extras to play other students within the university setting and fellow friends.

We are holding are auditions and giving our analysis on the candidates.

Firstly, the role of the leading male. A love struck student holding on to his past and his childhood lover. A good looking character who will be appealing to the female audience as the typical handsome boy. As the main lead male in the movie they need to be fully commited to the film production and avaliable for all scheduled filming days. We will be looking at well known actors in this feild of genre and other areas to help bring more attention to the film through his following.

Jack Johnson - Unsuccesful
A well known, established actor known for his bad guy roles. We felt he didnt really fit the personal specification for the character we were trying to create  but felt the big actors name could help meke the film established like himself. He is typically known to be badly behaved, storming off set with a bad temper. He can be difficult to work with and high demanding. His bad boy image seen both on and off screen is the reason why we have chosen not to pick him for this role and recomanded he apply for the boyfreind role in the film which fits its personal criteria more.

James Fitzroy - Unsuccesful
This young inspiring actor showed bags of confeidence and talent. He got the attention of the team with his passion and commitment he shown. Unfortunatly, we felt he too did not fit the criteriea we were looking for within this character. However, we have offered to take him as an extra as his commitment and funny personality would be a credit to the team. We hope to see a lot more from this young guy who continues to develop into all sorts of feilds of filming and will one day be a big star. His lack of awareness in the industrey is another factor to why we did not choose him as the lead male but what this space.
 This lad is going places.

Lewis Robinson - Successful
A very well known actor in the romance industrey. A heart throb with the woman appearing on grandmothers mugs to young girls walls this guy is everywhere at the moment. After climbing his way to the top with his enthusiasim this lad has had the lead in numerous successful blockbuster hits in the romantic feild. He has worked alongside some of the legends in filming and through is many performances found him perfect for the role. He fits the personal specification of good looking, student look that the audience can relate too. He is avaliable for all of the filming days and we feel his name could help bring in more extra viewers to the film and bring the films awareness up. He has his own following which will help through promotion. He is expensive at the moment while at the peak of his career but after reading the script said himself "thisrole  is perfect for me and i have experience of a childhood romance myself i can apply and relate too" We felt sure that Lewis was the one for this from the moment he walked into the audition and feel he will bring a whole great of experience to his fellow actors and the production team which we find will be a great credit to the team.

With the role of the female lead next we were looking for a good looking, sexy female actor who will bring a sexy edge to the film. The character of the girl is powerful and smart but shows signs of being vunerable. She is totally dependent on men in her life and feels hold back by her past she wants to let go off but cant. She really doesnt want to let go of her past in the end but tries to portray that she does want too. A complexed character with different layers of emotions and personalities which will need a very good actor to play her succesfully.
With the female lead we actually had to really well known actresess in the romance feild we approached to ask audition for the role. They were very simular in people and roles they have played. They are very good freinds and have worked alongside one another before and have been apart of lots of succesful films.

Aisling Byrne - Unsuccesful
Aisling showed great enthusiastic trates with great skills to portray the important emotional scenes needed for the film which her whole list of romantic films backs her up. We felt she was really good for the poistion bringing a sexy feel and vibe to the character and film. We felt she could master the layers to the characters personality really well. A girl at the top of her career who would fit this role perfect was unsuccesful. This was due to her lack of commitment as she is currently filming for the new James Bond film as the leading bond lady and she therefore, could only commit to certain days of filming when we would need her to be fully commited to all filimg days. With her other job planned for another 6 months filming around the world we could saddly and with regret not have the leading lady in the romance genre at the peak of her career in our film but wish her all the best in the new Bond film.

Ciara Walton - Succesful
A young rising star who has the world at her feet. Just out the back of a oscar winning film this young lady has everyones attention from the media, big directors and men from all over the world. After watching her performance in her lastest film we felt she was perfect for the role. She was tightly contested for the poistion with her best freind who dominates the romance genre when she is still in her "honeymoon period" of her career. we felt this talented young actor could bring and learn alot from this performance. Her amazing talents already have her an oscar and with the world watching her next move we feel this could bring alot of publicity to the film. She really understood the dimensions of the character and has already worked alongside on leading male actor Lewis Robinson last year and felt there was a real connection between them on set. She has fully commited to the poistion and while floods of offers for films, theatre productions and musical offers come rushing in she will only be working with us over the next couple of months. This will help her concentrate and we are proud to be apart of the production helping thjis young lady live out her dream and hope to guide her up to the top.

We feel the two leading actors and actresess where a success and feel there is a real connection between them on set and off set. We feel this is a great oppourunity in both of there careers with on at there peak and another as a rising star stealing the world media attention and boys hearts. Both very talented actors will be surrounded by young and ledgendary supporting cast which they can guide and be guided by to help attain a succesful production.

Meeting 2

The Agenda: Deciding genre and audience

Members present: Beth, Lewis and Ciara

Items discussed;
Discuss story line, poster layout, magazine cover designs and film title
We have decided to change our idea from a thriller, action style to a romance genre. This came from the influence from are research and equipment/budget avaliable to us. We had to be realistic of what we could achieve.
Our storyline starts of with a young boy and girl as childhood sweethearts. We then will show the two young children sharing a photo with one another and then them as a older couple in upper school. We then plan to show them has she has to leave packing her car away. Then how they meet at university and re-united but she has a new boy friend and is torn between the two. We plan to show the re-united lovers arguing but how they come back together and she has to make a choice between a childhood sweetheart or a new lover.
This is are planned storyline with the possibilitiy to tweak certain scenes during filming if we feel it doesnt suit the characters or scene. We may add another scene of her breaking the news to him that she has to leave but we feel this may add more lenth to the trailer.

We have come up with a film name "The way we were" linking the two childhood sweethearts to their past and how you can never always let go of your past.

We have some proposed layouts for the poster and magazine cover hoping to keep with magazine front cover and poster traits and conventions. But nothing has been confirmed just yet.

All promtional packages research has been completed with conclusion helping us decide and influence are magzine, poster and film trailer first drafts with the research we have discovered.

Proposed items for next meeting: Storyboards for the movie trailer

Research Conclusion

My research has taught me alot about the industrey of media, and what to do and not to do as a new film company producing a film trailer, magazine and poster in order for them to be successful. My questionnaire has helped me quickly establish my target audience and what they expect and want to watch in the different aspects of media. I have learnt how difficult it is to adapt to the different forms of media through ther movie trailer, magazine and poster and the different traits they all have which cant be broken in order to be succesful first time round as i found in my research you need to be established before you decide to break the dimensions of the media aspects and be really bold and creative.
Firstly, we have deicded on the genre of our movie trailer through the research conducted within the questionaire which was the most popular and we found a gap in the market for a childhood romance with elements of comedy in, to appeal to all of our target audience and people who wouldnt go and see a typical romance film would be intregeed by our movie trailer.
We found we also have to stick to traits and mention in our movie trailer the main actors to help bring attention to our movie trailer. This does have downsides to people who dont like the actors or actresses but i feel it has more postives then negatives in which will help us gain more attention to our movie trailer.
The layout of the poster and film magazine front cover from our research suggests we dominate the page with a large recongizable, casual shot from the film as people are more atrracted to visual items then text.

The group interview we constructed was a success but did have some faults within and is seen a lot within group interviews. We felt peoples view were being persuaded and manipulated by other people which was affecting are data. Also within the gorup interview person no. 5 we felt was lacking in detailed answers and bringing the actual level of information down that you would normally recieve. We felt this person would have been better in carrying out a questionnaire as the whole purpose of this group interview was detailed data coming back but this person gave one worded answeres which did not help to the success of the group interview.
When we asked the group interview candidates what was their favourite genre the most popular was romance and romantic comedy which helped us inflict our decision to use this as our genre. The memebers of the interview gave their own opions of what they thought was good no.1"i like the stroylines of Rom/coms yet i like the funny edge they have". This method of research helps develop a real personal response from the individual.
We also asked the group which one of the movie trailer, magazine and film poster is the most important marketing aspect for the promotion nof the film. They all but one said the movie trailer and as a team we have took this research and planned more time on the movie trailer to help us get this important aspect of marketing for the film right which against the the criteria of the course suggests as well by awarding more marks for the movie trailer than any other part of the media portfolio. No. 3 "Trailers as sometime the poster can look good but its the trailer where you decide whether to see the film or not"
We showed the group a set of movie posters with different layouts and asked them which one is the most appealing of which all but one answered with the traditional layout as the best. This could be due to the popularity of the film but mainly down to the simple, basic layouts which sticks to the traits of traditional film posters with a large image which dominates the page of an image from the film, large film title across the poster with mention of the actors and actresses staring in the film across the bottom. A colour scheme is used in this poster which is probably used throughout the other elemets of media.
Next we had the same layout as the questionnaire above by showing them 3 magazine covers this time and asked them to rank them with opions on each. They said again the magazine which sticked to magazine typical traits with a large dominate image overlapping the mast head with an action, casual shot. The research suggests we keep to typical traits and use well known actors on the front of the magazine to add to the promotion of the film with other information within the magazine to help make the front cover look realistic like offers on and other films inside the magazine. There is a colour scheme seen throughout which was commented on and therefore are research suggests that for a successful magazine front cover some sort of successfull colour scheme is needed. Also the different array of text size, font and colour is needed in order for the magazine to stick to traits and be a successful magazine that looks professional.
Fianlly, this question again had the same layout but we showed the group 3 movie trailers. Two of the 3 trailers stuck to typical movie trailer traits and these were the most popular ones within the group. The romantic trailer got the most votes as the best one which again shows and highlights the best genre to use as our movie genre as this is the most popular amoung the group and the target audience.

In all my research both primary and secondary was successful on helping are group decide on a movie genre for our film trailer. The research helped us establish as a team the difficulties in attacking different aspects of medi forms through a trailer, magazine and poster format. We have found in our research that the way to success is by being simple and stucking to the simple format and traits of each media method. We have found difficulties through our research and intially didnt have an idea on genre or stroryline before and we felt that this research has helped us find the right genre and style we want to achieve. The research as inflicted our ideas on design and planning process in a positive way. It helped us set our target market by finding the gap in the market we want to aim our film trailer at.

Group interview

With this method of research you can get real answers from your target market and get real detailed data of them. However, this method is time consuming as it can take a long time to get a group of people avaliable at the same time. It can be a lenthy form of retreving data but can produce high quality information. It works by someone asking a group of people 2+ a series of questions or showing them images or clips for their opinion. However, some people in the group might not feel comfortable speaking out in the group and voicing their opinion. In the same way some people in the group could not allow others to voice their opinion and they are only intereted in their own opinion. This all depends whether the group are freinds or are brought together in a group exteranlly and they will not no eachother. Within this exercie the interviewer will have to help let people voice their own opinion so the data retrieved is accurate.

I asked 5 people of mixed gender 3 girls and 2 boys a series of five questions and got there responses to these questions. I chose five as this was the maximuim number avaliable which is the downside to this form of primary research, yet chose to use a mixed gender as we will be aiming are film package at both genders and need to research both geneders. Are age range is 15+ due to our film being published a 15 plus it would be pointless and inaccurate to retrieve data of people who are not in are target market group. The group is of a mix of age of 16, 17 and 18 year olds which will be are target market age going slightly higher but again the practicality of the task we could only have this number of people as this age range was the only range we could find.
1 and 2 are boys and 3 4 and 5 are the girls in the group. 1 and 2 are aged 16, 3 and 4 are 17 and 5 is aged 18.

3. Trailers as sometime the poster can look good but its the trailer where you decide whether to see the film or not.

3. CAB the colour scheme is good, nice and clear text and large image. You know whats going on staright away and are drawn to that.

2. ACB Yes C is good but A is so simple and explains the film to you in 2 mins and doesnt give much of the story away like C does.
3. ABC A and B have good use of camera angles that invite you in through them. C reviles alot of the storyline.
4. ACB A is so easily understandble a child would understand. C is a bit complax and reveiles a lot of the storyline well B draws you in through antisapation.
5. BAC i really like B as it draws me in too.

Questionnaire Results

1.

My research tells me the most popular method of watching movie trailers is Youtube and cinemas. This means are movie trailer has to be published onto Youtube as part of our marketing to reach our full audience. To do this we must make sure the film rating are rate and that the Youtube audience matchs are target audience to help successfully bring awareness to the audience of our magazine. Televison advertisment is expensive and not within out budget as Youtube is a free method of reahing our audience. Therefore, we plan not to use televison advertisment as our research has shown us only 15% of people out of 100 watch movie trailers through televison advertisment. 40% of people from the 100 watch them at cinemas. This is due to them going to watch a film and the cinema play lots of different advertisment. This helps aim to a specfic audience and are movie trailer can be played when other simular films are being played. This means a set audience can watch the movie trailer and are forced to as unlike the other methods they cant change the advertisment or channel so therefore are forced to watch and absorb the trailer making it a good method. the expensive of this depends on how many times the film is played whcih can vary. However, this is still an expensive but effective method.

2.
This question aims to see whether are audience like to know what actor or actress is in the film as the mention of a big movie star in the trailer will boost the viewing of the movie trailer and tyhe film. Big branded names can help bring more attention to the film, yet the name of bad actors or actors or actresses that people dont like personally can put people of the film. Are research tells us that 80% of the 100 people said we should mention the names of the actors and actresses within the movie trailer. With this research we plan to highlight in are movie trailer the actors and actresses within the movie and will consider putting their bnames on the resting of the film poster and magazine front cover to boost awareness of the film.

3.
This question targets what area of film genere is the most popular amoung are age range of 12+. With this questionnaire the most popular movie genre within the age range is romance and romantic/comedy. Therefre, with this knowledge we plan to target the minority and seen a gap in the market for a school romance film with a twist of comedy as 20% of the 100 still said comedy is a big part and therefore, we plan to add elements of comedy into the performance to help us reach a wider audience. In all with this knowledge from the questionnaire we plan to use romance as our movie genre and add elements of comedy into our trailer to help reach a wider minority.

4.
With this questionnaire aimed at the best layout for a film poster the highest marks were awarded for the large image on the poster highlighting that the image on the poster is the most important feature. Therefore, they are split with no text and some text which some text got 60% of the 100 peopls vote well no text got 20% of the peoples vote meaning that some text is the most popular layout. This means that the most popular and to be most successfull layout will be the film poster with a large image and some text combining both designs. My research shows me that this is the most successful and appealing design layout to use and with this research i plan to use this design method for my film poster.

 5.
This question somes up the ideas of the prevouis question with the most valuable feature on a film poster. The image on the film poster on the prevouis question was highlighted as the most important feature and this question somes up the idea f the image being the most valuable assest of the film poster. Secondly, the masthead and title of the magazine front cover is also an important feature of the film poster as this is the film title and is the label of the film. This is what people use to see the film trailer or go and watch the film so therefore, this needs to be well visble on the poster. It links the poster to the film and people will recongize the film by the title and see the poster advertising the film. Thridly, the name sof the actors and actresses have to be mentioned on the film poster as a marketing aspect making the film more appealing and bringing more attention to the film poster. I know this from my research as the menitioning of actors and actressess got 15% of 100 people as the main feature meaning i will have to have this as a main feature on my film poster.

6.

This question comes from resrach from the promotional packages. Some fo the film posters that were resrached had no colour scheme and some had a colour scheme throughout the film trailer, poster and magzine front cover. This question undermines whether this is an important factor to have and see whtehr the colour scheme should be kept throughout. My research shows me that i should have a colour scheme and taht i should keep it throughout or have a simular one throughout. This helps tie the magazien, poster and film trailer together. I realise this as a design aspect can be heard to do throguhout and offered on the questionnaire the option for a simulat colour scheme which too was a popular choice. Therefore, i do plan to keep a colour scheme throughout as my research suggests 90% of my taerget audience say that i should have a colour schem. Although, i do relise later on that this could change slightly between the film poster, magazien and movie trailer and i understand this and will accept this However, i do plan to keep to the colour scheme throguhout.

7.

This question is aimed at the magazine front cover and what aspect should dominate the page. My research suggests that over half of the people who undertook the questinnaire suggest that the image should dominate the page making this like the film poster and the image the main focuss and feature. The masthead has also been made a main feature from my research as this is iconic to the magazine and is the same week in week out although the design and colour may change the name remains iconic to the magazine and apart of the brand. My resrach suggests this is a factor that needs to be considered but it does not dominate the front cover of the magazine as in traits of front covers they are usually overlapped by large images making them the dominate feature on the front cover which mky research also suggests.

 8.

This question is aimed at the front cover of the magazine and determines where the front cover shot should from. My research suggests that the most popular answer just is a natural shot from no filming aspects which is alos followed by the answer that the shot should be from the film. 10% of people said that it should be from an interview which is to low to consider this option. The interview shot is not iconic enought to remember and wouldntr draw much attention as know one will remeber the shot from an interview. This shot is usually done with the actor out of costume so no one might not remeber the character they made. With the research i conducted from primary questinnaires and research into promotional packages i plan to use a shot from the film with the actor and actress in a natural shot combining both views. This means the shot will be rememebered but it will not be an action shot. The actor and actress will be in costume still but be in a pose rather than an action shot. I chose to do this from my research as both ideas were very popular and if i chose one than i would lose alot of peoples views which i couldnt take the risk in doing so combined both ideas for what i think is the best solution to the problem.

9.

A.

B.

C.

With this question the audience were asked what was the most appealing magazine front cover. 60% said
C which i can only imagine was due to popularity and the colour scheme which if ound in my promotional packages research was a contributing factor. They use an action shot yet casual shot as the main image which dominates the page in C. However, the iconic logo of the magazine is used and adapted throguh the colourscheme to match the rest of the text and image to link. B uses the large image with no text but a masthead layout which got 22% of the vote. This is a powerful magazine front cover but i feel this would suit best as a film poster cover rather than a magazine as it doesnt stick to the triaits and relies alot on the bold image on the front cover. There is no information that is additinal that helps portray information that is within the magzine. A is a simple layout with an action shot with no real colour scheme that my research suggests is not a succesful magazine front cover. Through my research i have found that the most succesful magazine front cover is one with a colour scheme and a relaxed film shot. There needs to be text around the image to stick to the magazine traits as well as making the masthead iconic but fit into the the magzine colour and layout scheme by making the image dominate the front page.

 10.

A.

B.

C.

With this questionnaire its aims at the film poster and the poster that the audience find most appealing. This brings into factors the image, text and mention of actors and film title. B was the most appauling and least popular film poster with lack of title and information on the poster. A was not the most popular poster just, but the most powerful in terms of iconic and original. The design sees just a large image on the front with a balck background highlighting the image with the date of publication of the film. The simple but effective image relates to their audience and straight away everyone knows what the film is and the simple design gives the date of publication making it really powerful. The face is really iconic and although covered up somes up the film in one image. This is really powerfull and for me if we were making a film already released and established in the market the perfect design for a film magzine layout. However, as this is out first film we have to look at the success of the the Limitless C film poster. This too is a new film and uses the iconic actors images on the front to help boost attention. The colourfull layout helps make the poster noticed and the large title across the poster indicated to the audience the name of film which is important to new films tobecome established. The image dominates the page and highlighted to with a white outline to help break the image away from the busy, colourful background with the tile pasted across the poster. The main actors name are published on the top of the poster to help boost attentin to the film as well as the image. This is a sucessfull poster according to my research and is an iconic irst film poster. It sticks to film poster traits and highlights the right importasnt features that are needed to and un like A doesnt go against the traits of the film poster and isnt a unique which is the best and safest option for a first time film

Questionaire

As part of our research into are project we conducted a questionaire, of which is primary research, to find out are own research. We asked 100 people in our target audience of 12+ both male and female and people of different cultures of which around 50 were boys and 50 were girls. We plan to take the information we have researched to take forward into our development in the project.
The advantages of using a questionnaire as apart of primary researh is that it is a quick way to get data of your target audience. It goes directly to target audiences and gives a balence view from both genders.
However, there are some disadvantages like people can tweek the information and can be manipulated when carrying out the questionnaire with freindship groups.
